Dos and Don’ts: Traveling & Money

Traveling is exciting, but sometimes we forget to protect our belongings when we're in a new place. Take precautions to protect your money and accounts with these easy dos and don’ts.

Before you travel, it is always a good idea to clean out that cluttered wallet and only bring the cards that you will need on your trip. It’s best if you bring one debit card, one main credit card, and one backup credit card (especially if your trip will be a long one). That way, you will have access to what you need in case of an emergency. Removing unnecessary cards, identifications, and checkbooks from your wallet will reduce the damage if your property is stolen. Also be sure to use mobile wallet as much as possible; it is safe, convenient, and easier than exposing your cards to fraud.

It’s smart practice to have duplicates! Extra socks, extra toothbrushes, and extra copies of your important information. Things like credit cards, bank cards, and passports are good to have backed up. We recommend that you keep these copies hidden in your luggage or even with you, just in case. It is also helpful to know the U.S. embassy location in whatever city you’re in; that way if your passport or another important document is lost, they can help you.

Be aware; there could be bogus ATMs stashed in areas with high tourist action. To stay safe, only withdraw cash at an ATM near a bank, in an airport, or in your hotel. To be extra sure, it’s best to use Visa-approved ATMs. You can look up the nearest one on Visa’s website.

Watch for pickpockets! When you leave your hotel, only bring the cash you need for the day. Hide the rest underneath a drawer or inside a couch cushion; hotel safes are not always reliable. While out and about, it is best to keep cash in two places - smaller bills in your wallet for convenience and some backup cash in a hidden pocket or even your sock. While fanny packs may be in style, we recommend you leave them at home. The fanny pack is a well-known tourist accessory and it will blow your cover with locals immediately, making you a target for schemes and pickpockets.
